Information Technology Program

Program Description:

student working on network switchThe Information Technology program is career-laddered and competency-based. The program focuses on strong programming fundamentals, network connectivity, hands-on type projects, front-end graphical user interface (GUI) programming with strong connectivity to databases such as Microsoft ACCESS, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle in a stand alone as well as web environment. It provides training in the use and support of business-related computer systems, data communication networks (including local area networks), World Wide Web and its importance to businesses, and the development of business information technology systems programs using procedural and object-oriented programming techniques. The program includes a combination of business, computer, and information technology courses. Campus-based computer and networking projects, faculty-supervised laboratories, and workplace internships provide hands-on experience designed to prepare students for positions in computer support, programming, network hardware set up and configuration, or systems development in a business information technology system. The program focuses on computers, the Internet and the World Wide Web, and information technology as tools to solve business problems.

The program trains students in the management of storage and the use of client-server environments in the accessing, processing, storing, and networking of information on computer-based business systems. Today’s modern computing environment is a network of interrelated computer systems with connections via a local area network, wide area network, and the Internet. These computer-systems provide access to a variety of information to facilitate the operation of a business. The Information Technology program atKapiʻolani Community College’s ensures student currency in these areas through courses in information technology.

    • *Prerequisite - “C” or better in ENG 22, OR placement into ENG 100
  • Math 103 College Algebra
    • *Prerequisite - “C” or better in MATH 82, OR placement into ENG 103

  • ICS 101: Digital tools for the informational world
    • *Prerequisite - Placement into ENG 100, AND Placement into MATH 103
  • ICS 111 Introduction to Computer Science
    • *Prerequisite - Placement into MATH 135 or higher

National Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C):

  • Designation: CAE - Cyber Defense Education

Sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA), CAE-C designations are awarded to institutions that commit to producing cybersecurity professionals that will reduce vulnerabilities in our national infrastructure.

Kapiʻolani Community College was named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The CAE-CD designation is awarded to regionally accredited academic institutions that offer high-quality cybersecurity-related degrees and certificates.

The CAE-CD designation is based on a combination of elements related to the institution, focused on outputs for determining academic achievement. As a recognized institution, Kapiʻolani CC has demonstrated that it engages in significant community involvement, embeds cybersecurity awareness in classes throughout the campus, encourages faculty professional development, integrates cybersecurity practices within the institution and prepares students to meet the growing need for professionals with cybersecurity skills.

“Through the guidance of the NSA and DHS to become a CAE-CD institution, our cybersecurity learning pathway incorporates real-life scenarios, critical-thinking and problem-solving exercises, hands-on labs, industry certificate preparation and cooperative decision-making activities, resulting in fully prepared cybersecurity professionals,” said Kapiʻolani CC IT Director Dale Nakasone. “The CAE designation will benefit graduates from Kapiʻolani CC who will have the potential to become highly sought after as candidates for high-paying industry careers.”

Transfer Agreements (Articulation)*:

Students who complete the Associate of Science degree in IT may apply to transfer to the following programs via a transfer agreement with the 4-year university programs listed below.

Transfer agreements (also known as Articulation Agreements) are individual agreements between programs that facilitate a smooth transition from 2-year associate degree programs to 4-year bachelor degree programs.
