Alternative Fuels Technology Program of Study, Pathway Map to Employment

A career in alternative fuels technology focuses on developing, producing, and supporting fuels that reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels, such as biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, renewable natural gas, and other emerging clean-energy sources. Professionals in this field help create and distribute alternative fuels, build or maintain the systems that deliver them, and design the vehicles and equipment that use them. Students who pursue this pathway learn how raw materials are converted into usable fuels, how fueling infrastructure is developed, and how alternative-fuel vehicles and machinery are manufactured and maintained. Learning about Hawaiʻi’s goals for reducing fossil fuel dependence and exploring technologies like biofuels, hydrogen, and electric vehicles will give them a strong foundation for college and future careers in sustainable energy. The Breakdown of the Map

Starting in the Alternative Fuels Technology program of study in high school you will be introduced to key concepts, overall understanding of the field and the opportunity to explore the industry through work based learning to ensure this career path is the right fit for you. A career in Alternative Fuels Technology may require additional education depending on the path you want to pursue. While more training might be required, you may also be able to attain entry level certifications/courses that will allow you to work in the field right after high school.
