Programming Map to Employment

Computer programming is the act of writing computer programs, which are a sequence of instructions written using a computer programming language, such as Java, Python, C++, to have the computer perform a specified task. Computer programming is fun and easy to learn provided you adopt a proper approach and acquire the right skills. Through the many educational programs offered here in Hawaiʻi, students can learn these approaches to computer programming and enter careers such as Software Engineer, Software Developer, Software Analyst, System Analyst, and Database Developer The map below details the various pathways available in Hawaiʻi from high school through college and into a career.

The Breakdown of the Map

Starting in a Programming program of study in high school, there are three general educational pathways available. Most careers in the IT industry require some postsecondary education or training; however, there are a number of entry level positions within the IT industry that a person can obtain with only a high school education.

  • Community College Track (2+ Years)
  • University Track (4+ Years)
  • Training Programs (< 1-Year)

Map Overview: The large map shows all the possible educational and training pathways available in Hawaii. You can click on any of the bubbles to obtain more information.

 Admissions Requirement: As you navigate the map, be sure to read the admission requirements for the Community College and University Track Programs. You must meet admissions requirements to enroll in these programs.
