Program Description:

The concentration in Information Security and Assurance is the first of its kind at a public institution in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. UH West Oʻahu, in cooperation with University of Hawaiʻi Community Colleges, state and federal law enforcement agencies, state security officials, and local businesses, developed an expansive security education program covering a wide variety of technical and managerial aspects within the field.

UH West Oʻahu offers a four-year program and several pathway programs in partnership with to provide graduates with a high-level management education and cutting-edge technical courses to succeed in cyber career fields. Students generally complete all coursework at the UH West Oʻahu campus or sequentially complete the associate’s degree at the community college level, earning automatic acceptance into the bachelor’s degree program (see articulation agreements below).

Recommended College Courses during High School:

The courses listed below are recommended for high school students to complete through a dual credit program such as Early College when in high school. These courses meet degree requirements for the UHWO BAS - ISA program.

General Academic Courses:

  • ENG 100 Composition I
    • *Prerequisite - Placement into ENG 100
  • MATH 115: Statistics
    • *Prerequisite - “C” or better in MATH 82, OR Placement into MATH 100

Program Specific Courses:

  • ICS 101: Digital tools for the informational world
    • *Prerequisite - None
  • ICS 111: Introduction to Computer Science I
    • *Prerequisite - “C” or better in ICS 110, AND “C” or better in MATH 82 or placement into MATH 103, AND “C” or better in ENG 19 or placement into ENG 22 or higher.

*Prerequisites are courses or other background that must be completed PRIOR to enrollment. Prerequisites are REQUIRED for registration. Please contact program coordinator or advisor for information on placement into courses as there are multiple methods of placement per campus.

National Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C):

  • Designation: CAE - Cyber Defense Education

Sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA), CAE-C designations are awarded to institutions that commit to producing cybersecurity professionals that will reduce vulnerabilities in our national infrastructure.

Based on the rapid expansion of cyberspace operations and the importance of cybersecurity to both industry and the Asia-Pacific Region, the University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu (UHWO) developed the Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a concentration in Information Security and Assurance and Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. These degree programs are the first of their kind at a public institution in Hawai'i and the Pacific, developed in response to national and state needs for graduates with expertise in cybersecurity. The BAS - ISA program is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CD), certified by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

With the support of the Office of Naval Research, UHWO established the UHWO Cyber Security Coordination Center (CSCC) in order to further promote Cyber Workforce Development. CSCC students research and analyze global and technical cyber events in order to coordinate with and support local and regional partners. The Cybersecurity programs are the premiere workforce development degree programs at UH West Oahu, which has been one of the fastest growing four-year baccalaureate public schools in the nation.

Transfer Agreements (Articulation)*:

Students who complete the Associate of Science degree from the UH Community College programs listed below may apply to transfer to UHWO BAS ISA via a transfer agreement listed below.

Transfer agreements (also known as Articulation Agreements) are individual agreements between programs that facilitate a smooth transition from 2-year associate degree programs to 4-year bachelor degree programs.
