Culinary Arts Program

Program Description:

The Culinary Arts program is designed for students who are interested in becoming professional cooks, chefs, bakers, pastry chefs, institutional cooks, kitchen managers and those who intend to transfer to a four-year college. This program offers students the opportunity to apply and practice skills learned in all aspects of the culinary arts in a real-world environment. Students who join the American Culinary Federation prior to successfully completing the AS degree program requirement will be eligible for certification upon successful completion of their cumulative practical exam.

    • Specialization in Culinary Arts
    • Specialization in Pastry Arts
    • Specialization in Institutional Food Service Management
    • Advanced Professional Certificate, Culinary Arts (18 credits): for AS degree seeking students in Culinary Arts who intend on continuing into the BAS in Culinary Management at UHWO
  • Culinary Arts, Certificate of Achievement (CA), 39-44 Credits

Recommended College Courses during High School:

The courses listed below are recommended for high school students to complete through a dual credit program such as Early College when in high school. These courses meet degree requirements for the Kapiʻolani Community College Culinary Arts program.

General Academic Courses:

  • ENG 100: Composition I
    • Prerequisite: Placement into ENG 100
  • MATH 100: Survey of Mathematics
    • Prerequisite: “C” or better in MATH 75X, or Placement into MATH 100

Program Specific Courses:

  • CULN 111: Introduction to Culinary
    • Prerequisite: None
  • CULN 112: Sanitation and Safety
    • Prerequisite: None

*Prerequisites are courses or other background that must be completed PRIOR to enrollment. Prerequisites are REQUIRED for registration. Please contact program coordinator or advisor for information on placement into courses as there are multiple methods of placement per campus.

Transfer Agreements (Articulation)*:

Students who complete the Associate in Science degree in Culinary Arts at Kapiʻolani Community College may apply to transfer to the following programs via a transfer agreement with the 4-year university programs listed below.

  • UH West Oʻahu - Bachelors of Applied Science, Concentration in Culinary Management 

Transfer agreements (also known as Articulation Agreements) are individual agreements between programs that facilitate a smooth transition from 2-year associate degree programs to 4-year bachelor degree programs.
